Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about working with the office, time limits and practice areas.
Working with the office
How does the first meeting work?
The meeting can take place at the office, by phone or by video call. Briefly describing your issue and sending your documents beforehand speeds up the assessment.
Which documents should I bring?
Your ID; any notification, decision or payment order you received; relevant contracts, correspondence and receipts. Always note the date on which a document was served on you.
How are fees set?
Fees are discussed openly according to the nature and scope of the work and set out in a written engagement agreement. Under Article 164 of the Attorneys' Act, fees cannot be agreed below the minimum fee tariff of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations.
Can we work together if I am outside Istanbul or abroad?
Yes. Most cases and proceedings are conducted electronically through UYAP, so files anywhere in Türkiye can be handled. Meetings can be held by phone or video call.
How do I give a power of attorney?
In Türkiye, any notary can issue a power of attorney in favour of Att. Ahmet Bertuğ Dönmez (Istanbul Bar Association, reg. no 70835). Abroad, Turkish consulates can also issue it; a power of attorney made before a foreign notary requires an apostille and sworn translation.
How can I follow my case?
You are kept informed of developments. You can also view files you are a party to through the UYAP Citizen Portal on e-Devlet.
Is the information I share confidential?
Yes. Lawyers must keep confidential the information entrusted to them (Attorneys' Act, Art. 36). Your personal data is processed as described in the Privacy Notice.
What if I cannot afford a lawyer?
You can apply to the legal aid office of the bar association where you live (Attorneys' Act, Art. 176 et seq.).
Time limits and notifications
I received a decision or notification. How much time do I have?
It depends on the decision: for example, the time limit to sue against an administrative act is generally 60 days (İYUK Art. 7) and to object to a payment order 7 days (İİK Art. 62). Some time limits are much shorter. Note the date of notification and seek legal support without delay.
What is e-notification and when is it deemed served?
An electronic notification is an official notice sent to your e-Devlet address. Under Article 7/a of the Notification Law, it is deemed served at the end of the fifth day after it reaches your address, even if you do not open it.
By practice area
I was dismissed. Can I sue straight away?
For claims such as severance pay, notice pay and reinstatement, applying to a mediator before suing is mandatory (Labour Courts Law No. 7036, Art. 3). For reinstatement, the application must be made within one month of notification of termination (Labour Law No. 4857, Art. 20).
How much can rent be increased?
For residential and roofed commercial leases, the increase for the renewed lease year cannot exceed the change in the twelve-month average of the consumer price index for the previous lease year (Code of Obligations Art. 344). After five years, the rent can be set by the court on an equitable basis.
My residence permit was refused. What should I do?
As a rule, an action can be filed before the administrative court within 60 days of notification; you may also apply to the administration within the same period (İYUK Arts. 7, 11). If a deportation order was issued with the refusal, the time limits are much shorter.
